Maleic acid is a colorless crystalline organic compound with the formula \(C_{4}H_{4}O_{4}\). It is soluble in water, but when heated or burned, it produces irritating fumes and is considered hazardous if swallowed, in contact with skin, or if inhaled.

Application
Resin and polymer production: It is a key component in making unsaturated polyester resins used for fiberglass-reinforced plastics, as well as alkyd resins for coatings and adhesives. It is also used as a polymer additive to improve material properties.
